I was introduced to them by a fellow regency junkie, and since then have managed to buy about 2 shelves full, all of which I've read, many several times. I love all of them, but somehow keep re-reading "A Perfect Jewel" and marveling at the self-control of the heroine and the growth of the hero throughout the novel. It was lovely how you "rescued" them in "A Christmas Bride", too. Edgar is a wonderful character! I seem to have a silliness threshold--the heroine/hero can only be too stupid a limited number of times before I give up on the book--you have never once crossed the threshold. Again, thank you, and please keep writing!

I have never read much in the Romance genre, not even sure why I happened to read your, but I am so impressed with how different each and every one of them are. The characters are very well drawn, and seem very believable and true to themselves. My only regret is that I read them willy-nilly and without thought to there being an order to the stories. Is there a way to put all the series in order--perhaps a list printed somewhere? I will have to read them all again, something I am looking forward to doing anyway, but a bit of forethought this time. Is there a new book coming soon? Perhaps with a few characters we are already fond of? Please keep writing--they're wonderful!

I picked up a copy of The Notorious Rake and I was hooked after the first page! From there I went to The Counterfeit Betrothal and then spent far more time and money than was wise, searching for every Mary Balogh book ever published. In fact, it reminded me of my behaviour more than thirty years ago when my beloved late sister introduced me to the novels of Georgette Heyer. As a Jane Austen junkie, I loved the Regency period and found Miss Heyer's world enchanting. Her death in 1974 left us with no new storyteller for that period. I only wish my sister had lived to share the joy of finding you and your books with me. She died more than 15 years ago. By the way, we are also fellow Britons...actually fellow Celts. Marion and I were born in Scotland during the war, and emigrated with our widowed mother and two older brothers to America in 1950. Reading was our escape, our refuge. We didn't have much material wealth but we had the library and a passion for the written word. I have written to your publisher asking them to consider re-publishing your earlier works (ala Jo Beverly), but have received no encouragement. Now, I scour garage sales, used books stores, and the internet, looking for your early works. In fact,I just spent a small fortune on Amazon.com on seven of your books, and console myself with the fact that I don't drink or smoke and gamble infrequently. I'll buck the trend of your fans whose favorite book is "Longing," and tell you that "Indiscreet" and "Irrestible" have become the books I return to again and again. I've read all of your books at least twice, but have lost count of the readings of these two. In fact, I hope you re-visit this group of characters. Perhaps Claude's wife will meet with an unfortunate accident or fatal illness and he can be the hero of his own, worthier, love story? He's far too good for his present spouse. Thank you again. Sincerely, Dorothy Goeddeke

The love scenes were some of my favorite ever anywhere and I have read ALOT of romantic fiction. I read it as soon as it came out so I don't remember all so clearly but the scene where they are sitting up in the tree was phenomenal. I recommended the book to some of my friends who aren't ordinarily Regency readers and it was a huge hit! I just checked the website to see if anything was coming out for the holidays but I don't see anything. When can I look for the next? I can't wait!!! Having just re-read A Summer to Remember and having too much time to think while caught in a commuting nightmare (on Halloween, no less), I thought about potential parallels between Lauren and Julian, of Tangled. Both were orphans and much of their personalities seemed to stem from being outsiders in the families in which they were raised. Lauren became perfect, but Julian kept pushing back as if to see how imperfect he could be yet still be loved. Does this analysis make any sense to you, as creator of these characters?

Could you PLEASE talk your publishers at least into these two? Thanks, and keep on writin'

Jo kindly gave me your name among others and I'm very grateful. Your books are hard to find here, there are only 4 or 5 bookshops in Rockhampton, they get 1 copy of new releases (it seems to me)and your books never turn up in my favourite 2nd hand bookstore. I have just finished the 2 'Mistress' books and I'm desperate to read A Summer to Remember (having read One Night for Love) but it is nowhere to be found. I can get it freighted from US or UK but hardcovers are prohibitive, especially with the currency exhange. Will it eventually come out in PB? Glad to read that you intend to be prolific - I hope some of them filter down here to the edge of the world. Best wishes, Robyn

I do hope that they can be reissued, perhaps with related stories printed together in one book. I quite liked ASTR and am looking forward to Angie's story - hopefully there will be many glimpses of Ferdinand, as he is quite my favorite of all of your heroes. Also, after reading ASTR (and rereading ONFL) I hope there is more in store for Joseph, Neville's cousin the Marquess. Maybe he could become entangled with Freja? It lokos like there is a lot of curiosity among your readers about her! Thanks for the many wonderful stories & hours upon hours of reading pleasure you've given us.

| Wrote... Dear Ms Balogh: We are planning to reissue Rachel Field's 1938 bestselling historical romance *All This, and Heaven Too* in a quality paperback edition, and I thought you might be the perfect person to provide it with a new foreword. In case you're unfamiliar with it, it's based on a true story: it concerns a French governess, the author's great-aunt, in the mid-nineteenth century who is in love with her employer, the Duc de Praslin; his wife, the Duchesse, fires her without a letter of recommendation; when the Duc confronts the Duchesse, who refuses to back down, he murders her in a fit of passion, then poisons himself with arsenic; the governess becomes the talk of all Paris, and the scandal travels to England and America. After clearing herself in a sensational trial, the governess moves to New York, where she presides over a Gramercy Park salon frequented by many of the most famous men and women of the day. The book became a wonderful movie in 1940, starring Bette Davis. If you're interested, I'd be happy to discuss this in further detail. Many thanks for your consideration, Yuval Taylor Editor Chicago Review Press 814 N. Franklin St. Chicago IL 60610 ph. 312/337-0747 fax 312/337-5110 P.S. This is the second in a series of historical romances we hope to reissue; the first was *Forever Amber,* by Kathleen Winsor, to which Barbara Taylor Bradford provided the foreword. | |

Kit was the perfect hero to show her that she did not have to be perfect, just herself. I do hope that you will somehow write a story for Sydnam, however. So many Regency historicals deal with heros whose war injuries are, in the end, merely an inconvenience. Sydnam was both disfigured and had to find a new place for himself in the world since he could no longer aspire to be an artist. When he tells Lauren why he is angry with Kit I wanted to cheer and cry at the same time. All I could think was what a wonderful, interesting person he was. I'm hoping that somewhere in your next series he finds his HEA.

I know you're working on the six Bedwyn books, and hope your editor allows them to be published quickly. We cannot get enough! I'm especially looking forward to Wulfric's story. But, even more than that, I'd love to see a story about Kit's brother, Syd Butler. Would you please please PLEASE consider giving Sydnam his own book? I found myself constantly drawn to him while reading "A Summer To Remember." And of all the characters in "Summer," he's the one I found myself thinking about for days afterwards, his quiet strength, his determination to lead his own life away from his family's over-protection. He'd be a marvelous hero! And I'd love to see the woman worthy of his deep regard, one who sees beyond his injuries.... Anyway, thank you so much for all your wonderful books. In the Obediant Bride, Arabella actually takes on the notion that husbands must have mistresses and that she should be happy with it, and in Gentle Conquest, a somewhat similar stance is made, with Georgina taking on the role of mistress for her husband. Any chance you could be doing some more regencies in the future? They contained such unique characters, smart dialogue, that I think is harder to project in historical novels. They also were very challenging of the morals of that period. Thanks.

I have to confess that it's Saturday night and I have spent the last half hour here on your web site after spending the previous hour and a half rereading "Irresistible" for the third or fourth time. I have saved nearly all of my copies of your books and get them out every now and then and reread them, often finding details and nuances that I missed the first time. My absolute favorite, I think, is "Silent Melody." A more unique romance I've never read. I always have tears in my eyes when I finish the last page. Your story inspires me. I checked out a book recently about writing and publishing historical fiction, but as the mother of 6-year-old and a 3-year-old boys, I figure I'll be lucky to get started when the youngest starts school. Reading your story made me realize again that having the dream is a great thing in and of itself, whether or not I ever make time for it to come true. In the meantime, please keep writing your wonderful stories. I love the interconnectedness of your characters and the fact that villans and minor characters can often show up later as heroes and heroines! How like real life that is! Tracy Stansberry

So I got to read it first and I will be able to reread it often since it will be my copy. I also became very fasinated at what Lady Muir's story is. I think her marriage was not all that it appeared to be. I think she is hiding something about her dead husband and her accident. That is the story that I can't wait to read. I even thought that she might be interested in one of the Bedwyn brothers. I can't wait to read all these stories. I hope you don't mind my thoughts on your characters. I have been 'hooked' ever since picking up 'The First Snowdrop', many years ago... It is still a favorite Regency! Having just finished "No Man's Mistress", I must confess I have kept ALL of my Balogh books. (I also have well over 200 of Barbara Cartland's) The warmth, honesty and genuineness of the characters in Balogh stories make them 'real' and a wonderful read. I appreciate the way you handle intimacy, sans crudeness or lewdness. It is sometimes hard to find 'clean' reading these days, unless you go to - some mystery , science and fantasy fiction....ala Harry Potter, Judge Dee (Robert van Gulik) , or anyhing Tolkein and Anne McCaffery. Oh yes, !! Thanks for the peek into your delightful, beautiful family! Your children are all so handsome! I hope they are as wholesome as they look. I am now addicted to the Regency period. You have inspired me into a personal study of 'the times' . Did you know it is possible to send for a real 1810 London newspaper? Really interesting. The wages were so small...and the advertisements were a hoot... Thanks again for contributing such dimension and pleasure to my life through your stories.. Joanna Jones in Ohio

It's very disappointing because I once owned them all. I hope they will be reissued again someday. Do you know of any way I can buy used copies more economically than I am finding right now? I look forward to reading your books for many years to come. It's refreshing to read quality writing in this genre- much of it is not up to your standard. Other writers I enjoy very much are Edith Layton, Joan Wolf, Mary Jo Putney, Elizabeth Mansfield, and some of the newer writers like Candace Hern, Elizabeth Fairchild, and Andrea Pickens. Write a whole book for him! As much as I like your female character, it is your male characters that keep me coming back. I especially like the way that you make ordinary guys into heroes (Gerald Stapleton, Paul Villiers are my favorites). But why do you use names over again? I mean Lord Ferdinand Dudley cried because of frustration. I also liked the fact that he was unsure of what women liked and looked for guidance from his family. One thing for sure, he is definitely a Knight & Shining Armor. I am looking forward to your next novel A Summer to Remember. I enjoy reading Historical romance novels and you have definitely have made it a joy! Thank you!

Your stories invoke such a vivid picture of the Regency period. I am always amused by one's perception of things. Your little Regency "Famous Heroine" is the one the put the idea of writing back into my mind. Thank-you for the hours of enjoyment. Beth

I, too, am a high school business teacher at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky, and am currently building a new house in Benton. My mother took me to the library every week when I was young and I developed a love for clean romantic novels with happy endings. My daughter, who lives in Norman, OK, wants to be a writer and is currently looking for a job with her English and Business degrees from Harding University. Her English professor told her she was one of the best writers if not the best writers she has had in her upper level classes. She knows she will have to start working in industry or news writing. Hopefully, one day she will get published. Since I have found your web site and found other books on Amazon, I am planning on buying more. I wish you and your family the best and hope you have many happy writing years ahead. Sandra Driver

| Wrote... I have read your most recent books, "More Than a Mistress" and "No Man's Mistress" and found them both to be delightful!. I am a devout mistery novel fan, but had virtually abandoned the romance novel some years ago as a genre for regular reading. There was a time a number of years ago when I was living in Portland, Maine when I "toyed" with the idea of writing a romance novel about characters in that area. I read several books on writing romance novels, and even wrote a first chapter. I did not continue for a number of reasons. But last year I happened to see a paper- back copy of your book "More Than a Mistress" and was mildly intrigued by the plot. I am also a teacher,(of Spanish), and found myself one Sunday afternoon in late May reading your book for almost the entire afternoon instead of grading my papers. I knew you had to be a VERY GOOD writer!!!!! Your work has inspired me to take up an old dream this summer!!! You write a good story, with characters that are witty and engaging. The romantic scenes are warm and full of feeling, not as "clinical" as some written by authors in your genre. Thank you for the pleasure reading your work has given me! | |

I am a raging feminist and rarely make it past the first 50 pages of a romance novel but yours always seem to work. I never used to pay much attention to authors but I am making an effort to collect your books since I notice a lot of books I love you have written (Case in point the Precious Jewel which is fabulous) I guess I have the same complaint as everyone else though. So much of your stuff is out of print that it is so costly to get even one book. Have you ever looked at how much some of your books go for on ebay. over $30 bucks for a paperback. Please Please Please rerelease some of your older work. And I prefer hardbacks for books I reread over and over so keep releasing in hardback please.

I still have several Baloghs in my collection that I have purposely not read yet. I'm saving them (hoarding, actually) so that I will always have a new Balogh to look forward to. I dole them out to myself very stintingly. It would be so easy to sit down on a long weekend and read one after the other (a sort of Balogh marathon), but that would be pure gluttony. OTOH, that sounds like pure blisss to me! I may have to rethink that! I certainly hope I die before you, because then I won't have to worry about never having another Balogh to look forward to. You should write a few "secret" manuscripts, Mary, and hide them in a trunk. Don't laugh. See, what would happen is that several years after you have passed on, one of your children could "find" your long lost manuscripts. There would be a feeding frenzy of publishers waving fistfuls of money for the privilege of publishing those manuscripts. Your fans would go wild. Your children hold out for even more money, knowing there is an avid nation of Balogh fans who would kill to have one of your new books. Your children could sell to the highest bidder and retire to a life of luxury on the proceeds. Neat plan, huh? :-) Sincerely, Sherrie

Jane and Jocelyn particularly appeal to me. They are well matched, and I love the give and take between them. (Thanks for providing the original ending to their story). I hope you continue to write so incredibly well and so often. Each new book is a delicacy to be thoroughly enjoyed. I just wish some smart producer would translate some of your books to the screen a la the PBS version of Pride & Prejudice or Ang Lee's take on Jane Austen. Again, many thanks for the reading enjoyment you've provided to so many.

So my husband and writing friends all say I must go to Denver this year. Will you be there, so I can shake your hand and try not to stammer too much? I hope it is going to be a farce - I just love you farces and truly miss them. Angeline is a perfect heroine for a farce and it would be interesting to read her love story with the "dry stick" Lord Heyward. Sounds like Jo and Paul Villiers - a perfect combination. I'm also glad that the series about the Bedwyns will cover two years only - I can't get enough of your books and I have to wait longer because I only buy the paperback editions, not the hardcover as they are too bulky to take with me (I live in the islands and go to work via ferry every weekdays) and I spend my time reading on the journey. I will finally be able to read No Man's Mistress paperback edition this June. I discovered some of your books three years ago, but it was only upon reading More than a Mistress that I really became "obsessed" about all you books. Thank goodness for the internet and used book sites, I can get them. I just paid a very expensive price for the Secret Pearl but it was worth it (I have to say though that Fleur & Jane Ingleby's predicament were a bit similar). Your farces are also my favorite. I also love The Christmas Bride (thank you for the epilogue) and it was a sort of a reunion for all the characters like Cora & Francis, Gabriel & Jennifer, etc.., I love all their individual stories. Another of my favorite was Christmas Belle (I didn't like Jack Frazier that much in the First Snowdrop but he really redeemed himself in Christmas Belle). The Notorious Rake is also a favorite and I am looking for the Trysting Place w/c is out there but is very expensive. I like your books because it really touches me - it makes me cry, laugh, yearn....You have also created memorable characters - Lord Edmond Waite, Edgar Downes, the Earl of Thornhill, Fleur, Clara, down to the minor ones like the Stewart family (Freddie & Ruby, the Duke & Duchess of Portland) and memorable scenes in your books. Like your description of the nativity play they were enacting in the Last Waltz, Jack Frazier's discovering how different joy was from pleasure because he had been a father and experiencing it at Chrismas eve because a daughter has been "born" to him, or even the discovery of that first snowdrop, first by Alex and then Anne. I could go on forever.... All I can say is that you're really up there on my favorite writer's list and I thank you for the sheer joy reading your books gives me. I can't say all of them are superb ( there are some disappointments too, like the Double Wager, but only a few) but a majority of them are really good. Again, thank you. I hope you can update your website more often.

I have been a fan of yours for many years now and I'm intent on completing my collection of your books and short stories. You have such a gift for making the reader feel completely involved in the story and it's characters. You are the ruler to which I hold up all other authors. I read Regencies almost exclusively, except for the occasional special like "The Christmas Box", so I am very fussy and critical. I have to be able to lose myself in a book or it becomes a chore to read it. I have enough other chores to worry about. I read to escape them. I look forward to "A Summer to Remember" with great anticipation! You never disappoint me. I love to read your postings on the fan club page too. I think it's great that you keep up with all of the fun and nonsense and are so good about answering any questions. You must be a very special person. Sincerely, Debbie Germano

I have just finished reading Indiscreet for the third time and wonder (again) if the character of Claude will find a better partner at some time during his life. You have drawn a wonderful male character who perhaps deserves more than a "harpy" for the remainder of his life.

As a child I was a loner and found books to be a great comfort. I grew up in a small town consisting of about 400 people and in this town, we had a small post office that had a free books box. I got hooked on Regency romances at the age of 11. At first I picked out Barbara Cartland's books becuase of the neat drawings of her covers. When I ran out of things to read, one day I picked up one of her books and found that I liked all the detailed history of that particular era. Barbara was a good historian, but I got bored with all the mushy love stuff real quick. After that I would go to the post office and get any book that was a regency romance. As I started to read more books I began to recognize certain authors. My favorite author became Marion Chesney because her books had much detail of the era as well as a realistic, if humorous touch to them. I still like her writting and if truth be told, have read everything I could find that she's written. I discovered you a lot later, like about 4-5 years ago. What I liked about your books was the realism and deep emotion that you put in your characters. The first book I read that you wrote was "Christmas Belle." Usually I read regency romances to unwind and relax, they were not meant to be deep or thought provoking. Your books have actually made me cry on occasions. Another thing I liked about your books is that you interweave characters from one book to other books, this just keeps me looking for more of your works. As it is I find that I exchange my regency paperbacks to used bookstores for more books but I hang on to all of your books. I also continually look for more of your books, right now I am just beginnig "Thief of Dreams", I am looking forward to reading your new "Mistress" series as I have just read your newsletter. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading your books. I have read a lot of regency books and have to say that you have a unique writing style. Keep up the great work.

In this world of so much unhappiness it is just nice to read of happiness even if it is fiction. Since it is now 2002, do you have other books out since No Man's Mistress? If so could you tell me what they are and where I can get them. I usually buy my books in Saskatoon, sometimes at a second hand book store. I look forward to hearing from you Sincerely Doris

I honestly feel that your publisher should put out your books more often...when I am in book stores I see new books far more frequently written by some very familiar authors (though I don't always read them). Those that I see usually are paperback...what actually is the advantage of issuing them in hard cover? Is this a prestige thing? As I told you in previous correspondence I have duplicate copies of many of your backlisted books but haven't made the effort yet to find an outlet for them on your fan list. Perhaps I will soon. I know I would be grateful to find those I didn't have. By the way, the last one I found was at a flea market about a hundred and fifty miles from home on a jaunt last fall. Paid 50 cents for it...unfortunately it is a duplicate. My best to you...Virginia

I felt that you had a great storyline going, but then ubruptly ended the book at the ball with Jane and Jocyln getting together and quietly married. I would have loved to have "seen" Jocyln grovel a little more for Jane. What I especially loved about the book is that Jane is a strong woman with a sharp wit. The banter between Jane and Jocyln throughout the book is priceless.
