I just finished reading More Than A Mistress (in about three and a half hours) and feel as though I've struck gold! I picked it up on the New Fiction shelf at my public library, and thought that if Susan Elizabeth Phillips could rave about you, then I'd better see what all the talk was about. Thank you for a wonderful book and for giving me another author whose work I will probably devour. I look forward to searching out your past works and anticipating the future.

I started to read your books when my husband was posted with the R>A.F. to Goose Bay in Labrador. Now thanks to on-line ordering I can buy them in U.K. not just on infrequent trips to the U.S.A. We had 1 or 2 in the local library but you are very difficult to find in U.K. Thankyou for many hours of reading pleasure.

I've stopped on your site at least a dozen times but never knew what to say. I finally realized that I just have to say what so many other readers have said. I treasure your stories and really look forward to reading more of your creations. For much of my reading material, I buy from a used book store but I usually have to go to a retail store for your books, as not many are turned in for resale. So thank you for sharing your talent with me. Finally, I'm looking forward to reading your future books.

Every Christmas, I re-read your Christmas novels, in particular, Christmas Belle, my second-favourite of your novels, and Christmas Bride. They are so good that each time I enjoy them as if it were the first time. I have read romance novels since 1973, when I was a teenager. I appreciate that now many of the heriones are mature women, like me. I hope you will continue writing for many years. Merry Christmas.

Dear Mary, I enjoy your regency stories very much and have, I believe, most of your books includung your latest, More than a Mistress. I really love your regency stories but cannot seem to find another after The Last Waltz (Signet). You used to bring one out around Christmas time and I have been searching but have had no luck. Have I missed one? I wish you all the best for the Christmas season and 2001. Sincerely Pat Lockey

INDISCREET has always been one of my favorites, and I just wrote a review of it for www.newandusedbooks.com. I thought you might enjoy one sentence in particular: "Rarely does a full-length novel combine the bold passion of an epic with the quiet humor, knowing detail, and elegant manners of an old-fashioned Regency." And Clarissa and Claude are just as interesting as Rex and Catherine!

Thank you for the many wonderful hrs. of travelling into what is surely a simpler time w/out the tech-stress of today. Oh,yes! I almost forgot to mention that my daughter"s longtime signif. other is a Welshman. He could have stepped out of one of your novels. He's very kind, adventuresome, tempermental and handsome. Dear Mary, It's been a very long time since I felt compelled to write an author and tell her how much I loved her book. I LOVED "More Than a Mistress"! It's particularly unusual for me since I've avoided Regencies and historicals for the last few years -- like the plague. I was strictly Ms. Contemporary Romance, but I'm eager now to find your other books. And I can't wait for Ferdinand's story! Do you have a publication date? I loved your storytelling, the dialogue, the characters, the sex. Jane and Jocelyn are wonderful! He is such a snob. She is such a smart-mouth (him, too). He is so vulnerable. She is so smart. What a combination! "Oh, is that you, your grace? I had quite forgotten you were here." "... I so rarely have the opportunity to take tea with a former employee." ZING! I'm a voracious reader but it's been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed "More Than a Mistress." Thank you for a great read, and a great deal of reading pleasure. Laura Arnsbarger

I read constantly, and the other day I was suffering for a Regency "fix." I can "go without" for long periods of time, and read mysteries, contemporary romance, current best sellers, etc., but every so often I need the escapism of a well written regency -- and they're really not that easy to find, usually lumped together with other romances. Having taken an early retirement and consequently on a very limited budget, I use the public library a lot -- and lo and behold! --this day I walked in to find your hardcover More than a Mistress in the new arrivals. You saved my life!

Hi there, I had written you in the middle of September, and I do believe that your guestbook devoured my message. That was not well done of it (big grin)! I do enjoy your books tremendously, and I wish the National Library Service for the Blind recorded more of them. In September, I had read the Gilded Web, only to find out that there were two books attached to it. The two books, of course, are out of print, and so, I am left not knowing what happened to the characdters. I was wondering how one can obtain those books. The NLS told me they did not record out of print books, so I am wondering if your books will be reprinted in the near future, or if there is a way to get a hold of the two books so that I can scan and read them. I would really like to know what happened. I think it's a shame that the books are out of print. You do write such wonderful books! I can't wait for the day that books can be bought and downloaded off of the Internet. That way, I can read them using my talking computer and be happy as a clam before it gets out of the water and into the frying pan! Thank you for reading this message, and I do truly hope that the guest book does not become rabbid again and eat up my message for breakfast.

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful books! I can't tell you how deeply some of them have affected me -- the characters and situations are so real even though they are set in another place and time. I wondered what life experiences make a person so understanding of and sensitive to our human needs and emotional pain. I have never written to an author before, but I looked for your website and read your personal notes about yourself. I was not disappointed -- I found the person is as intriguing as her books. Debbie

Sorry to add another entry so soon to my last one - but after reading some of the other letters I thought people might be interested in yet ANOTHER web site I have found. www.newandusedbooks.com has an enourmous amount of Mary Balogh books, both new and used. It states the condition and the price of the book - most of which are under $10.00 and some are priced under $5.00. I know this won't help the woman who asked for places to buy that aren't on the internet. But for her if you ask your local bookstore - they will order almost anything for you! The more people out there buying or requesting Mary Balogh books the better!

Mary - I wanted to thank you so much for alerting me to the Hunger Site, I sent that same information to about 50 of my friends, family and co-workers hoping that they would be interested enough to participate on a daily basis. After about a month I became aware of the Rainforest Site, then late this summer of the Kids Aids site, and finally during the last month of the Children's Health Site and the Breast Cancer Site. All these sites are from the Greater Good.Com and I can only say that if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be aware of any of them, or been able to particpate so easily (with a click of my mouse) in helping. I obtained a copy of your current book and have enjoyed it immensely. Can't wait for it's sequel next year. I have so many favorites of yours - The Temporary Wife, Lord Carew's Bride, Heartless, and the Berkeley series (which I just reread). I just feel so good when I get through reading one of your books. Thank you for so many hours of pleasure.

The last time I visited your web site I did not read the personal information you shared about yourself and your family. Today when I stopped in again I learned many new things and appreciate your sharing your journey to the destination of my author...ess! of choice with me. I want to tell you one thing I often tell my family and friends who sometimes comment on the books I read. I read many different topics and works but when I read for pleasure you are tops on my list. I am not the best grammer user and often am spelling challenged. The problem with that is I still have a lot to say and realize I have these communication shortfalls. When I read one of your books I know a person with a concern for entertainment with excellence in language usage has been at work. You have helped me, an adult who earns a living and has a diploma, use better grammer and to recognize authors and editors who do not care and only perform in the contex of one more book to sell. How proud your family must be. Thank you for responding to my last message. I am saving it...a message from Mary Balogh!!! How great.

Dear Mary, Thank you so much for the stories you've written! If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be "A Precious Jewel" - but that's an awfully hard choice. I too have had difficulty finding your older titles, and I'm very happy to hear that Bantam Dell is looking at them. With the amount of junk published monthly, you'd think Dell would be smart to put out something that there is an assured market for. Is there a specific person at Dell you would suggest I contact to let them know how I feel? Thanks again - Lisa.

Your writing always gets to the heart of your characters. I came to the site to see what is next!! I am delighted that other works are in the works, as it were. I have mentioned before that I am an aspiring writer, although too busy lately to do more than dream about it, but I find you to be a worthy model and measure. Please, keep writing! Dear Ms. Balogh, I finished reading Tangled and I must say that it was absolutely wonderful and brought a few tears to my eyes which does not happen to me very often. (You being the only author able to do this and my favorite). I have read all of your books that I have been able to get my hands on and loved them all and your lastest was no exception. My favorites being The Secret Pearl and Tangled. You really know how to touch on the emotions when writing and make each character seem so very real and stay with you long after having finished reading the book. Keep up your excellent work. I look forward to reading your next release and some of your older books that are so hard to find.

Dear Mary, I have just finished More Than a Mistress. I'm happy to see you are writing Ferdinand's story, but I found myself more interested in Angeline and Heyward. I think their story would make a good prequel. What I like most about your books are how distinctive your characters are. Most romance authors vary their plots, but their male and female leads are interchangable from one book to the next. I also like the very strong period sensibility in your books. I like historicals because I want to read about other times and sensibilities. I don't want to read about a 21st century person in the 19th century--if I did I would read contemporary novels. Keep it up! Sincerely, Michele

I have long wanted to tell you that "Tangled" is still one of the best stories I have ever read. I have even reread it several times. I have never gotten so emotionally caught up in a story or with its characters. I realize that there is no possibility of a sequel to it, but I keep reading and hoping another one of your books will touch me almost as much. So far, "Deceived" is the only one that has come close. This is by no means meant as criticism of your newer titles, as they have been an enjoyable read. I guess I just identify with your older titles. Thank you for writing such wonderful "keepers".

Your stories of Wales, Truly and Longing, encouraged me to visit North Wales as part of an Elderhostel trip this summer. I found it to be a beautiful country. The book I enjoyed very much was Secrets of the Heart which I lent to some one and never got it back. Dear Ms. Balogh I am a devoted fan. I simply love your writing. Each book touches me in a special way. I have been a romance fan since my early teens, and have read many authors. You are the best. Two years ago, on a train trip from Wolf Point, MT to Savannah, GA, your novel Heartless, was one of the books I stuck in my bag to read. It was perfect. The story, the characters, the setting. All wonderful. Ever since then, I have been collecting your novels. I have not read one that I haven't been touched by. I just wanted you to know how wonderful I find your stories. Someday, I hope to collect them all. And I have a dream of writing my own story some day - actually, I have for many years, since I started reading - and your stories make that dream rekindle when it starts to fade. I appreciate your writing so, much, I just wanted to let you know. Thanks Stacy P.S. Thanks for explaining how to pronounce your name. I have always wondered, and to tell you the truth, I had been pronouncing it incorrectly. Now I know!

Most of what is marketed is drek (a technical term, you know), but your work is consistent and wonderful--your characters' motivations and actions are believable, your dialogue is fluid, and your plotting is a satisfying blend of the inevitable and the completely surprising. Congratulations on "More Than a Mistress." I thought it was a phenominal book, one of your absolute best. I was reading through the reviews on Amazon, and was surprised to see a few negative ones. (Did they read the same book I did???). Anyway, I wrote a five star review for you (under the title "Romance Readers Rejoice") and I wanted to thank you personally for not abandoning the romance genre and your romance readers. When I heard that you were coming out with a hardback, I groaned out loud. It seems that almost all of the finest romance writers abandon the romance genre as soon as they make it in hardback, and switch to murder/mystery/suspense. It's almost as if romance isn't prestigious enough for hardback. I find this extremely frustrating-- shouldn't love be more prestigious than murder and violence?! I greatly admire your writing and its unfailing emotional intensity, and have been an avid fan since your very first book. I wait impatiently for Ferdinand's story, and I would love to hear more about the sexy Viscount Kimble as well!! Thank you very much for the many hours of reading enjoyment you have given me over the years.

The love scenes were just so touching - What I really liked was even though you went into detail which is fine since we're all adults here but you just made the scenes so sexy and romantic too - not distastful. I can't wait for the next book on Ferdinand. I also think you should backtrack and do one on their sister. She is quite a character with her funny bonnets and her husband who loves her inspite of her clothes and how she threatens the brothers not to get killed but at the same time wants them to fight for the family's honor. You have to write about her too! You can backtrack for her can't you? Thanks for so much enjoyment. Maureen

Being both a librarian and a "book person", I participate in discussions more than the average reader. I never miss one dealing with any of the romance genres. For regency, Jane Austin, Georgette Heyer are, of course, cited. When the modern writers are mentioned, Mary Balogh is often proposed as the best of the current writers in the historical/regency genre. And the reaction is ALWAYS enthusiastic agreement. The genre is one of my favorites but your character development and smooth writing style really sets your books apart from the pack. I am constantly amazed and impressed with the way you can make me hate someone in one book then turn it around and have me sympathizing with them in the next - and in less then 250 pages or so. Hi Mary, I discovered your books a few years ago and love them. I see that Bantam is reading some of your older books with a view to re-publishing them. To give them incentive and an idea of demand, they should check out the Amazon and E-Bay auction sites where some of your older book (Trysting Place, Constant Heart etc) regularly sell for $20-40!!!! Am looking forward to reading your new book. Imoni

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed every one of your books. My collection is extensive and I read them again at particular times of the year. Your approach to the issues of " freedom of choice" for the heroines is refreshing and wonderfully subtle. I also really like the way you have of capturing " family " . THe character of "Freddie" a while back .. was especially dear. So, I was particularily pleased to hear that you have another big, noisy family knocking on the door of your imagination. I will look forward to them as they unfold. Your Neighbour in Calgary Lesley Fenton

Hi Mrs. Balogh Just surfing around and thought I'd stop in for a quick look-see. You have a very impressive site and an even more impressive list of titles. Your a very hard authoress to keep up to. Criag and I are still in Regina and between two full time careers and two preschoolers we're kept pretty busy. Kayla will be five in Oct. and is starting kindergarten this fall. Wow- time flies. Ashley's just over two now. Craig still does investments and insurance and now I'm nursing on coronay care at the Pasqua. Best Wishes Laurelle

I appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to respond to all questions I've ever asked and also appreciate the books by other authors that you have recommended. BOOKSELLER & FAN BEGS HELP! I am a bookseller for Borders in Murray, UT, with an obsession for romance. I actually started working part time there because my husband said I should just get paid for all the hours I spent there. I have done a lot with the romance area, enlarged it, created permanent displays, made their presence known on the mass market table and we have seen great results so far. My Romance Book Club has gone better then anyone had expected with 12 members and 8 regulars. Now here I am today writing to you in search of some advice and perhaps assistance. Just for the record, my sister in law got mem hooked on your books years ago. I have been a fan for quite a while and Silent Melody put you over the top for me. You are a fabulous writer who has afforded me many hours of enjoyment. I thank you! Now for that dreadful business stuff. My latest and biggest project is our upcoming Romance Fair. It is October 14th and we have a fun day planned with signings, author panel, tarot card reader, knights fencing, costume contest, glorious pastries, etc. I would love any suggestions or advice you might have on what works and what doesn't with these events. I will admit to being a bit of a newbie, only a year of bookselling and this is the first big romance event (but not the last). I have the drive, I just need a bit of directional assistance sometimes. We are also planning a raffle of autographed book baskets with proceeds to go to two charities near and dear to me, Primary Children's Medical Center, their language and literacy development program and the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter. I love this idea but I am having a problem getting moving on it as I'm not real sure where to go from concept to actuality. We would like to do 5 big baskets, 4 for the raffle and one for a teacher on Teacher Appreciation Day the following weekend. We will include coffee, mugs, chocolates and whatever other fun things we can throw in. The raffle will start September 9th, with the drawing at the Romance Fair. But now how do I get lots of authors to help me out with their autographed books? Do I ask them to donate outright as many as they can afford to? Do I offer them postage paid mailers? We will of course include the authors who donate on our promotional materials and such as well as a display of all those who donated that will be up for the month. Keep in mind you are on my dream list. If you are ever in the area I would love to host a signing for you. You just need let me know what I need to do and I'll set it all up :-) Lastly, for now anyway. If you have a promotional type mailing list would you add me to it? PLEASE. I have had a time getting promotional materials, authors of course have been great but I just don't have time to contact everyone. If you would include me on your list it would be most appreciated. The address and information is below. We have a couple other fun things going on including a mailing list and monthly romance newsletter. I am having the time of my life with all of this. I realize how very busy you are and completely understand if you are unable to take the time to respond, I will not be offended in the least. If you are able to take a few moments I will be profoundly grateful. All my best! Gail Stordahl-Brown Borders Books & Music 132 E. Winchester Murray, UT 84107 e-mail: Corp01@aol.com

I've been a historical romance reader for several years, but I ran out of authors whose work I thought was worth reading. Finally, someone recommended Regencies to me, and I am so happy that I picked up some of your books. I really enjoy your writing and can't believe that you can fit so much emotion and character development into shorter books. You have such talent. I have also picked up a few of your longer books which I am looking forward to reading on my vacation. (I have to save them until then--otherwise I will be up all night because I cannot put them down.) Thank you and keep writing!
